Australian Celtic Women brings together an all-female ensemble of some of Australia’s best musicians. No matter where you’re from, our stirring shows transport you on a musical journey to the heart of Celtic culture in Australia and beyond. 

Stunning visual effects, angelic voices, costumes and choreography combined with the richness of Celtic instruments – fiddles, harp, bagpipes, whistles, bodhrans, guitar, drums, percussion and keyboards – provide an unforgettable performance full of warmth, leaving you wanting more.

Our ensemble

  • Melinda Coles

    Playing 13 instruments including fiddle, harp and cello, Mel’s energy and enthusiasm sees her dancing across the stage, through the audience and into our hearts. She won a scholarship to the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music at 7, studied with Dr Suzuki in Japan, was invited to direct the National Fiddle Rally at the National Folk Festival and has played in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland. Mel is the founder and Musical Director of both the Moreton Bay Fiddle Club and Norfolk Fiddle Club, plays fiddle for Limerick MCB, teaches music (nominated twice for Aria Music Teacher of the year) and runs 'Music as Therapy' programs for children with social and learning difficulties. She also runs the Fiddles and Giggles program, taking students to Vanuatu to teach music and fundraise for instruments.

  • Miranda Starr

    Miranda's vibrant personality and sheer energy shines through every show. Miranda has extensive experience singing with professional Corporate Bands at numerous 5 Star venues and Island resorts within Australia. Residencies include six months in Mulligan's Irish Bar (Holiday Inn, Shenyang) China and four months in Japan including major Chinese festivals and television. Miranda's rich voice is equally at home singing blues, ballads or pop and now celtic music. With a passion for music, choreography, fun and showmanship, her dynamic vocals sparkle with pure emotion to dazzle all.

  • Kathryn King

    Working as a professional opera singer, Kathryn's rich operatic voice soars through Celtic melodies with warm, rich tones. She has performed extensively around Australia and Asia, and most recently with Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, Underground Opera, Vavachi Entertainment and Queensland Musical Theatre. Kathryn graduated from The University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Education (Music / Drama), completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Opera at the Victorian College of the Arts and subsequently, completed her Master of Music studies at Griffith University in Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane.

    Celtic heritage
    Kathryn's family came from Scotland and "County Down" Ireland, travelling to Hobart and Adelaide in the late 1800s. But, we just refer her as our 'Star of the County Down'.

  • Gabrielle Jack

    Gabrielle has a soaring soprano voice that easily moves between Celtic, folk, classical and operatic genres. She studied opera at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has won a host of awards for her operatic and classical work around the country. She developed a love for close harmony during her time in the award-winning University of Newcastle Chamber choir and loves to write harmonies for Australian Celtic Women to sing! Gabrielle is a regular performer with Vavachi Entertainment, Success on Stage and the Passione Vocali trio with Raffaele Pierno and Leanne Warne.

    Celtic heritage:
    Gabbie has 2 great great grandparents from Scotland. Alexander Scott, from Colmonell in Ayrshire arrived in 1878 and Katherine Hastings, from Huntly, Aberdeenshire between 1852 and 1873. She has 15 Great x3 grandparents from Celtic lands of Scotland, Ireland and Wales, hailing from the counties of Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Tyrone County, Tipperary, County Clare, County Galway, Pembrokeshire and Monmouthshire.

  • Jeannine Phelan

    Jeannine is originally a classical pianist who studied at the Conservation of Music in Queensland. In recent years she has discovered a love of Celtic music after joining the popular Norfolk Fiddle Club as a founding member. Jeannine brings elegance to the show, tinkling the ivories, or in this case the keyboard. With Celtic heritage running deep in her family and being married to an Irishman, she is looking forward to sharing Celtic sounds with our audience.

    Celtic heritage:
    Jeannine's background is a blend of English, Irish, Scottish and Dutch. Her father's side traces back to the first fleet, after an affair between an English officer and a convict. Her husband's roots run deep in Ireland, with his father migrating to Australia from County Limerick in the 1950s, and falling in love with an Australian champion Irish dancer.

  • Melanie Smith

    As a professional drummer for more 30 years, Mel has had the privilege of playing for a variety of bands and artists in Brisbane and throughout regional Queensland, including shows with Phil Emmanuel. Originally hailing from Sydney, she has traveled extensively to 35 countries and as part of those experiences she has enjoyed playing some drumming guest-spots in the USA, Japan and Thailand. With her musical and drumming roots primarily in rock, blues and metal, Mel is now also savoring the energy, passion and fun of Celtic music!

    Celtic heritage:
    From 1700-1800s Mel’s family ancestry included Scottish, Irish, English and Danish, prior to her great-great-grandparents settling in Australia.

  • Camille Layt

    Camille has been a piper for more than a decade, performing at festivals, concerts and events in Australia, and internationally in Scotland, France, New York City, Boston, and Las Vegas. Camille is active in the pipe band scene – she was president and pipe sergeant of the Brisbane Pipe Band, an active member of Pipe Bands Queensland, and is part of the Dojo University team - the world's largest and longest running online bagpiping school. Camille's also a writer and editor, and co-published an award-winning bestseller, Finding Bagpipe Freedom, in 2021.

    Celtic heritage:
    Camille's maternal great-great-grandparents were Irish, emigrating to Australia from County Cork in the early 1900s. She also has Scottish ancestry on her father’s side.

  • The Shamrock Dancers

    Specialising in traditional Scottish and Irish Dance, alongside original performance choreography pieces that incorporate all Celtic Dance forms. The Shamrock Dancers have been participating in all areas of performance, from Celtic Festivals and Formal Events to teaming up with Celtic bands. The Shamrock Dancers are available on request.

  • Pipers and Drummers

    The stirring sound of pipes and drums always evokes deep emotion from audiences! Our show incorporates pipes and drums in our ensemble, but we sometimes perform with additional pipers, drummers, and pipe bands. If you’re interested in booking a gig, pipers and drummers are available on request.
